Alexander II was Emperor of Russia from 2 March 1855 until his assassination on 13 March 1881. He is remembered as Alexander the Liberator, as he led the emancipation of Russia´s serfs; during his reign, he kept seeking peace, although the context of the surrounding countries was proving more and more difficult. Although he went down in history as a reformer, his actions were too little too late for the revolutionaries of late imperial Russia, who managed to assassinate him in 1881. This concise presentation will help you understand this part of Russian history and the particular struggles this careful pacifist had to put up with in a troubled country. 1. Language: English. From the author of The Fifth Avenue Artists Society comes this unforgettable historical novel based on the founding of the country´s first sororities. Illinois, 1881: Whitsitt College sophomore Beth Carrington has two goals to fulfill by the time she graduates: obtain a medical degree and establish a women´s fraternity, Beta Xi Beta, that will help young women like herself to connect with and support one another while attending the male-dominated Whitsitt. Neither is an easy task. The sole female student in the physicians´ program, Beth is constantly called out by her professors and peers for having the audacity not to concentrate on a more ´´fitting´´ subject like secretarial studies. Meanwhile, secret organizations are off-limits, and simply by crowding together in a dank basement room and creating a sense of camaraderie, she and her small group of fraternity sisters risk expulsion. In order to have the fraternity recognized, she knows she needs help. She turns to the most powerful student on campus: senior Grant Richardson, Iota Gamma fraternity president and the scion of a Whitsitt family - a man she´s only acquainted with because of her longstanding friendship with his fraternity brother Will Buchannan. Staunchly traditional, Grant doesn´t see the purpose of this women´s organization, but captivated by Beth, he agrees to give her a helping hand. What she doesn´t know is how many will stop at nothing to keep her burgeoning organization out of the record books - and who she can actually trust along the way. As Beth fights for her beloved Beta Xi Beta to be recognized, she will uncover deep secrets about the college and those who surround her and will have to put both love and friendship on the line so that history can be made. 1. The story of an irrepressible orphan girl in the Swiss Alps, written in 1881, has long been one of the most beloved and best-selling children´s classics in the world. Heidi´s story begins when she is orphaned at the age of five and sent to live with her reclusive, embittered grandfather on a mountainside above a Swiss village. Heidi´s grandfather has been estranged from the villagers for years and he resents the child´s arrival, but she wins his affection with her enthusiasm and cheer. Her rural idyll is cruelly interrupted, however, when her aunt sends her to the city to be a hired companion to a wealthy girl in a wheelchair. Clara is delighted by her new friend, but the family´s strict housekeeper tries to repress Heidi´s high spirits and the girl begins to waste away, pining for her mountain home. The resolution of Heidi´s dilemma transforms the lives of everyone around her and has entranced readers for generations with its vision of the joys of country life and the power of love and friendship.
